Electric vehicles have become one of the fastest-growing segments in the automotive industry. With nearly every car brand offering at least one model with some kind of electric power, popularity is rapidly increasing and technology is advancing just as quickly. Jeep has joined the electric vehicle endeavor as part of FCA’s Dare Forward 2030 plan. With the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids already available, Jeep also has two all-electric in the works to be released in the coming years. Please continue reading below to learn more about the current and future Jeep electric vehicles!
Jeep Wrangler 4xe
Introduced in 2021, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe took the legendary Wrangler and brought it into an electrified future with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. The 4xe system features Jeep’s 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, two electric generators, and a rechargeable battery pack. Engineers swapped the Wrangler’s traditional alternator out for an electric generator to provide the battery with regenerative braking and a more seamless engine start-stop operation. Meanwhile, the transmission’s torque converter was also swapped out for an electric generator, providing instantaneous power to the wheels. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission that pairs with the Selec-Trac full-time 4×4 system providing excellent traction both on and off the pavement. The Wrangler 4xe’s 400-volt battery pack offers a capacity of 17.3 kilowatts. If you’re a numbers person, the Wrangler 4xe provides 375 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque, 49 MPGe, 21 miles of all-electric driving, and a total driving range of 370 miles.
Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
After the success of the Wrangler 4xe, Jeep expanded the 4xe powertrain to the Grand Cherokee. Using the same turbocharged engine, electric motors, and battery pack as the Wrangler 4xe. With the 4xe powertrain, the Grand Cherokee achieves horsepower and torque numbers of 375 and 470, respectively. Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee 4xe provides drivers with a fuel-sipping 470-mile total driving range, 25 miles of all-electric driving, and an impressive 56 MPGe. Since 4xe stands for ‘four-by-electric,’ the Wrangler 4xe isn’t the only PHEV Jeep with 4×4 capability. The Grand Cherokee 4xe comes standard with Quadra-Trac I 4×4, which provides optimal traction on all road and weather conditions by sending 48% of torque to the rear axle and 52% of torque to the front axle. Meanwhile, Quadra-Trac II is optional for the lineup while standard on the Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve. Quadra-Trac II replaces the single-speed transfer case with a two-speed transfer case. This provides the system with 4-High and 4-Low drive modes. Additionally, The system constantly reads road conditions and sends torque to the axle with the most traction to provide the best possible grip at all times. Lastly, Quadra-Drive II 4×4 is also available. It employs a two-speed transfer case as well, instantly sending up to 100% of torque to the axle with the most traction. Quadra-Drive II comes with an electronic limited-slip rear differential to send up to 100% of torque to a single rear wheel if necessary.
