About Inwood, West Virginia
Inwood, West Virginia is a census-designated place where, in the late 1880’s, around the same time that the Cumberland Valley Railroad extension arrived, Inwood Park was founded on the property of the Strong family. The Inwood Post Office opened on May 5th, 1890 and the village’s population grew. The land now known as Inwood was originally named Gerrard. There are two stories of how the name came to be Inwood. First, some believe it got its name from Inwood Park’s location “in the woods”. Hence the name Inwood. Another story is that the village’s first postmaster Jonathan Newton Thatcher wanted to open a post office in the name of Gerrard. However, Authorities saw this as a conflict with the town of Gerrardstown just four miles west. As the story goes, Thatcher’s cousin, who lived in Inwood, California, showed him a letter with his home address on it, inspiring him to rename the town. Popular attractions in Inwood today include JayDee’s Family Fun Center and Taylor’s Farm Market.
